5 Ways To Make Your Dorm Room The Ultimate Home Away From Home

Our go-to-guide for settling in at uni.

POSTED BY LIV LEFTWICH

Going to college or university is one of the biggest milestones in your life. You’re embarking on a whole new chapter, which usually involves living away from home for the first time, meeting new people, and tackling the next big step of your education. Daunting to say the least – right?

We’ve put together our top tips for making sure your dorm room is a home away from home, which will help put you at ease as you venture out into the next phase of adulthood.

Utilize Your Space

Most dorm rooms are pretty basic when it comes to size. You’ll have a dedicated space for all the necessities, but it’s up to you to get creative with the space and make it your own.

To free up extra space for personal, sentimental items – invest in clear storage boxes that can simply slot under the bed. This way, you’re minimizing clutter whilst making space for the things that really matter.

Vamp Up Your Bedding

Your bed is the focal point of the room, and it’s where you’ll probably end up spending most of your time. Whether it be laying there hungover after a night out or indulging in a pamper night with your flat mates – your bed is a sacred space that should never be ignored!

So, don’t be afraid to go all out when it comes to accent pillows and throws. In our opinion, more is more – play around with textures, fabrics, and colour schemes, until you find what works for you.

Having a bed that screams comfort but also has a luxurious feel, will help relax you - even during exam season.

Personalize

Ensure that you invest in some photo frames or fairy lights prior to your arrival at uni.

Guaranteed - these are both items that you’ll need, if you haven’t got them already! Dedicate an accent wall or specific area to pictures of your family and friends, and you’ll minimise the chances of feeling homesick.

Don’t Neglect The Floor

You’d be surprised at how much impact a statement rug can have, particularly if your room is on the smaller side. Opt for a sheepskin style that can even be draped over your desk chair, for an extra comfort!

Keep It Tidy

Keeping everything in its place will not only help you navigate your new environment better - it will also give you mental clarity, knowing where everything is.
