Three Shows to Help Ease You Back into College
Because you can't always be studying!
Where did the summer go?
That’s the question most college students are asking themselves this month after another long, hot summer drifted by without so much as a farewell. Chances are you’re scrambling to register for your classes, coordinating timetables to make sure you’re in the same classes as your besties and considering taking out a mortgage to pay for your textbooks.
However, if you’re dreading the thought of losing all that free time you wasted but want to catch up on the best shows you might have missed (as well having a few conversation starters for freshers’ week) look no further! Here at Fizzy Mag, we’ve made a list of the hottest shows right now (the ones worth watching anyway) so you don’t have to.
The White Lotus
This HBO satirical comedy is an absolute laugh-a-minute. The series follows a cohort of wealthy one-percenters on holiday at a tacky resort in Hawaii, as their petulancy wreaks havoc on the staff just trying to get on with their jobs. The cast is impressive - from gay icon Jennifer Coolidge (Legally Blonde, 2 Broke Girls), Nashville and American Horror Story royalty Connie Britton and, most notably, breakout Euphoria star and Twitter muse Sydney Sweeney.
Sweeney plays a prickly, college student - and an acutely accurate representation of Gen Z. She reads Karl Marx by the pool, is a walking pharmacy with her bottles of anxiety medication and muses over whether her gay grandfather might have been a power bottom. The show explores the generational gap between its younger characters and the Baby Boomers through clever, relatable comedy and is an absolute must-watch. For crime fans, the show has an interesting murder mystery twisted in the heart of the show that makes it easy to come back to. One of HBO’s better (and funnier) outputs in recent years that is enjoyed best with a few drinks - or worse.
The Chair
This Netflix original is the definition of short and sweet - consisting of six thirty minute episodes that can easily be watched in one sitting. In the lead is the fabulous Sandro Oh (Killing Eve, Grey’s Anatomy) and supporting is the inimitable Holland Taylor. Set within a crumbling Literature department at a less than prestigious college, English majors will be able to sympathize and hopefully get a good laugh out of this lovingly ironic show. Yet Sandra Oh gives a performance that really is one to remember (when doesn’t she?!) and it’s her character that truly glues the whole thing together. While it does stumble in a few places and gets a little silly, it really is all part of the show’s unique charm. Though perhaps to be avoided if you’re planning on studying for the first time this year!
Brand New Cherry Flavor
This is probably the most, eh, unique choice on this list, for lack of a better word. Fans of David Lynch, David Cronenberg and the body horror genre will certainly find themselves at home in this feminist horror set in a washed out, psychedelic Hollywood. Lisa Nova (Rosa Salazar) arrives in L.A. with an acclaimed short film in her back pocket and the sole ambition of getting her movie made. But, when she crosses the wrong people and loses everything, she stops at nothing to exact her revenge; including witchcraft.
This cathartic yet stomach churning mixes powerful female rage with zombies, hitmen, supernatural kittens and Catherine Keener as an intimidating tattoo artist with a knack for potion-making. It’s an absolute trip of a watch, with dark humor that makes you question your morality but not for the faint-hearted as it will put you off your lunch!
And remember, when times get rough and exam season rears its ugly head….there’s always The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.
Best of luck with the coming semester - you’ll smash it! :)
