Charlie Stein: Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost

Memory, Touch, and Digital Decay in Mallorca.

POSTED BY WAN B

Under the hazy light of Mallorca’s CCA Andratx, Berlin-based artist Charlie Stein cracks open the concept of memory with her new exhibition Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost. Borrowed from an old Nintendo warning screen turned cultural meme, the title folds nostalgia, fragility, and techno-fear into one beautifully human confession: nothing lasts. From October 3 to December 20, 2025, Stein’s Kunsthalle 2 show becomes an analog time capsule for emotions that glitch before we can name them.

Flesh, Fabric, and the Ghost of Touch

Her work doesn’t paint bodies so much as dissolve them. Latex torsos, padded limbs, and ghostly hands float through glossy surfaces — like digital avatars slipping out of the screen into the real. Each canvas holds a tactile charge: intimacy translated into texture, touch rendered as resistance. Stein turns classical painting into a protest against disappearance, archiving the warmth that modern life keeps erasing.

Between Utopia and Burnout

If her figures feel displaced, it’s because the world is too. Isolation, ecological collapse, and digital decay pulse through the show like background static. Yet within that chaos, Stein insists on tenderness — as both an act of rebellion and a way to survive the scroll. Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost is a manifesto for memory in a disposable age, a gentle demand to feel before it fades.
