The Chappell Roan Effect

She really is a super graphic ultra modern girl.

Chappell Roan is an upcoming mainstream artist who rose to stardom in April 2024 with the release of her hit singles ‘Good Luck, Babe!’ and ‘Hot to Go!’. Although she’s spent less than a year in the spotlight, she has thrived and continues to grow with the rise of her other songs and sold-out shows. However, she is not your average singer. This small-town girl is making an impact felt by thousands across the globe.

If not for her impressive vocals, Chappell is widely recognized for her distinctive outfits and heavy makeup inspired by her love for drag queens and dramatic costumes. Bold colors, sequins, and sparkles — she does it all. This artist is all for breaking norms and creating innovative looks that shock and wow her audience.

This queen of camp is also considered an icon in the queer community as a lesbian woman that speaks about her same-sex love interests through her music. As seen in her fashion choices, Chappell is influenced by the art of drag; she proudly supports drag queens and transgender individuals.

As a result of the new presidency in the USA, controversial topics such as gender identity and transgender rights have been under attack. However, Chappell has been using her platform strategically to support the queer community and those who experience discrimination. During her Grammys red carpet interview, she voiced her opinion on recent struggles concerning transgender rights:

“It’s brutal right now, but trans people have always existed, and they will forever exist, and they will never, no matter what happens, take trans joy away. And that has to be protected more than anything because I would not be here without trans girls.”

Chappell also used this year’s Grammys as an opportunity to advocate for developing artists in the music industry to be treated as “valuable employees”. In her acceptance speech for winning ‘Best New Artist’, she unapologetically voiced her opinion:

“I told myself if I ever won a Grammy and I got to stand up here in front of the most powerful people in music, I would demand that labels and the industry profiting millions of dollars off of artists would offer a liveable wage, especially to developing artists.”

This statement received a standing ovation and an emotional response from her fellow celebs who have too experienced the highs and lows of the cut-throat industry. As a singer who was signed as a minor, dropped, and then signed again, she has encountered many hardships, and is now asking record labels to support their artists mentally, physically, and financially.

One of Chappell’s songs from her most recent album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, is titled ‘Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl’. In an interview with Capital Buzz, she describes a super-graphic, ultra-modern girl as “a girl who is herself, living her life, having a blast in the club, […] who really [is] so confident in [herself] and love[s] the fact that [she’s] like, a freak, and weird.” This pretty much sums up Chappell Roan. She is certainly not afraid to be herself and stand up for what she believes in.

She continues to release music and wear the most wild outfits while empowering women, supporting the LGBTQ+ community, and demanding that all artists, who work so hard to do what they love, receive the care and recognition they deserve. She is the femininomenon the world needs.
