Carly Cushnie Decides To Shut Down Her Brand
Carly Cushnie and her brand Cushnie are black excellence and here’s why.
Carly Cushnie, the CEO and creative director of Cushnie announced in a statement on Instagram that her brand Cushnie has been affected by Covid-19 beyond repair and will officially be closing its doors.
The news was unexpected especially with all the success Cushnie has had. Cushnie has dressed some of the most iconic people including Michelle Obama, Beyoncé, Selena Gomez, and so many more.
One thing that will go down in history is that Carly Cushnie is a designer that broke barriers and Cushnie the fashion label broke barriers as well. Period. In Carly Cushnie’s statement she makes sure to acknowledge having to fight harder than her male peers:
"It would be neglectful not to acknowledge having to fight much harder than my male peers to be afforded the same opportunities. One of the greatest ironies of the fashion industry is that while it caters to and profits from women, it has never felt like an industry that supports them. This is especially true for women of color.”
Cushnie achieved an incredible amount of success. Many aspiring black female designers still look up to Carly because of the impact she has made on the fashion industry.
Cushnie has become a centerpiece of New York Fashion Week. Cushnie is sold all over the world at some of the best retailers. Carly Cushnie has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the CFDA and took part in the CFDA Vogue Fashion Fund. Carly also became one of the very first black female designers to have a successful collection with retailer Target.
It is hard to say goodbye to Cushnie but the future is so bright for Carly Cushnie and we know that her impact on the fashion industry has not ended.
