So I go to University for a very boring, very generic degree–drumroll–Economics, at an academically grilling institution I voluntarily signed up for. For most of the year, glamour is limited to library lighting and the occasional tote bag. Which is why the annual ball feels like less of a social event and more like a collective hallucination: one night where everyone pretends we live in a period drama, minus the corsets and with significantly worse music.

If you’re in the same boat as me, and hopefully doing a more fun degree, consider this your permission slip to dress for the night and celebrate being hot and smart — even if your mid-semester results are currently disputing that claim.

Start with something that already feels familiar. If you still fit into your high school prom–and it still fits your college-girl aesthetic–STICK TO IT. But if not, and you qualify as a spendthrift, think of purchasing a gown that embraces your body structure organically. If you're conscious of wearing body-hugging satin dresses, opt for A-line off-shoulder pieces, or if you prefer halter necks over thin straps, think of backless. If you want to dress safe for the ball, a slit won’t hurt. We can be modest and still serve.

For the color palette (to match your Pinterest board) –bold jewel tones, muted pastels, or classic black — and let the fabric do most of the talking. Hair and makeup can stay effortless–loose curls or waves, a low bun, or a sleek ponytail.

Choose the gown that moves with you, cuts that let you dance, and details that make the outfit unmistakably yours. It’s about feeling Bridgerton-chic, even if your economics essay is waiting for you the next day.
