Black-Owned Line Of Swimming Caps Banned From The Olympics
The brand's application to be certified for the Olympics was rejected.
The International Swimming Federation (FINA) has decided to ban swimming caps by Soul Cap, an inclusive line offering comfortable options for athletes with voluminous hair such as afro hair or braids.
According to a press release from Soul Cap the certification was denied because it had been concluded that ‘athletes competing at the International events never used, neither require to use, caps of such size and configuration'. The rejection further referred to the swim caps as unsuitable because their shapes are not 'following the natural form of the head'.
Following the rejection Soul Cap founders Michael Chapman and Toks Ahmed issued a statement on the company’s Instagram account:
"This isn't just about the Olympics. This is also about the lower leagues of competition swimming — for swimmers at an age where feeling included is so pivotal in their development and goals. We don't see this rejection as a setback, but rather a chance to open up an important dialogue and make a bigger difference.”
