Best (And Easiest) Houseplants To Propagate
A cheapskate's path towards becoming a plant parent.
You're a student. You're broke. Your rental home is looking particularly empty. None of these things change the fact that you want your house to look cute.
So what do you do? You propagate.
There has never been a time where a plant-y interior has not been fashionable, homey, or desirable, but greens can be very expensive. That being said, a whole lot of plants can be propagated, which essentially means you can take a leaf cutting and re-grow the plant elsewhere. So buckle up, keep an eye out for the following plants and make sure you have a pair of scissors handy to snip a cutting.
Pothos
Pothos - AKA the basic bitch which earns its title for a reason; it's accessible, easy to care of, and quite pretty. You've probably seen it all over your Pinterest mood boards.
Monsterra Deliciosa
Ah, Monsterras the baby of all hipster plant parents. They're pretty, tropical, and light up pretty much any space.
Philodendron
We're getting a bit more obscure with Philodendrons. They're still strikingly pretty, and would look beautiful propped on a plant stand and a lovely clay pot.
Snake Plant (AKA Sansevieria trifasciata)
The pretty but catty-looking plant is a great addition to any space. It looks elegant and serious, ideal for any serene and mature plant parent.
Prayer Plant (AKA Maranta Leuconeura)
What a funky name for a plant ey? This one calls for it to be placed in a plant altar, with its majestic-looking leaves and equally as captivating name.
Hoya
Just like its name, this plant is short and succinct. Don't mistake it for an underdog though, and the right care can make it grow pretty big.
Just remember, there are lots of different-looking plants that fall into these botanical families. Get yourself a botanist friend (or an app - there's an app for everything these days right?) and identify what you have at home already. We'd be surprised if you didn't have one of the plants we've mentioned already.
