Mark Your Calendars, Early Barbie Reactions Say It’s Gonna Be Epic

It's a Barbie-world, and we're just living in it.

Early reactions to Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie are pooling in, and they’re just as glowing as you’d hope. Warner Brothers Studios held a small test film screening last Thursday in New Jersey, with movie-goers giving their unofficial reviews via Reddit. “Fiercely feminist and volcanically hysterical,” wrote one alleged attendee, with another hailing the film as a predicted “obsessive favorite”.

Reviewers praised the movie’s candy-colored visuals, forecasting awards for the costumes and set design. Ryan Gosling’s performance as Barbie’s beau “Ken” was acclaimed, with his character dubbed a “scene stealer”.

“It deconstructs the feminist iconography of Barbie and recontextualizes her for a new generation,” one user wrote. “Since this is Gerwig, there’s a big heart at the center.”

The summer release will feature Barbie venturing off into the human world after her imperfections banish her from Barbieland. Alongside Australian actress Margot Robbie’s valley girl Barbie is her longtime love Ken, whose sole purpose is to worship Barbie, played by Ryan Gosling. The pair question their role in Barbieland, in an existential, toy-sized tale. Brought to life by Lady Bird director Greta Gerwig, the film is one of 2023’s most highly-anticipated releases.

Balancing top-notch comedy and sly political commentary, Barbie appears to take after its namesake, and can do anything. As the film date inches closer, we can’t wait to see what sugar-coated strangeness Gerwig’s Barbieland has in store for us.

Barbie is set to release on July 21st, 2023, in movie theaters only.
