Aye Aye Captain: Why Is Piratecore Taking Over

A rebellious trend with a wearable twist.

POSTED BY ANNMARY MAILYAN

When it feels like fashion trends can’t evolve any further, there’s always a new aesthetic ready to take over. This time it’s Piratecore—a new Pinterest aesthetic that’s slowly stealing the spotlight. Inspired by 17th-18th century pirate fashion, it blends nostalgia for historical dressing with a rebellious edge.

In reality, the influence itself isn’t exactly new. Designers have long been drawn to pirate-inspired elements, incorporating them into their creations. A great example is Vivienne Westwood’s “Pirate” collection, which made a lasting impact on the fashion industry. However, the term Piratecore itself is relatively new. It started gaining popularity in 2025, and now it’s shaping up to be one of the biggest trends of this year.

I know what you’re thinking: is it really possible to dress like a 17th-century pirate without looking too theatrical? As someone who’s genuinely into this trend, I looked into ways to make it feel wearable for everyday life.

Layering like a pro

When you think of pirate fashion, layering is probably the first thing that comes to mind.  Unlike most trends, here you can go all in and mix pieces that wouldn’t usually make sense together. A leather jacket over a velvet blazer over a leather vest over a silk blouse? In any other context, it’d feel excessive. But in Piratecore, it actually works. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different combinations: you might be surprised how well they come together.

Mixing different fabrics

The charm of Piratecore lies in its contrast. Historically, piracy was associated with adventures, danger, rebellion, and a certain romanticism. And if you think about it, clothes act as a metaphor for that contrast. Delicate and rough materials coexist here effortlessly, creating a layered, textured look. Think soft ruffles or draped fabrics paired with leather. Different worlds, but somehow perfectly matched.

Chunky pieces

Piratecore is anything but minimal. Pirates were never known for their subtlety, and neither is their style. Their style leans toward bold statement pieces, like wide belts with oversized buckles, bucket boots, oversized shirts, structured corsets, and eye-catching jewelry—large hoop earrings, chunky rings, and layered necklaces. And, of course, the tricorn hat. I get it, it might be a bit much for everyday wear, but you can always switch it for a beret or a structured hat.

Neutral color palette

Do you remember pirates dressing in bright, saturated colors? Okay, aside from Captain Hook. In reality, they leaned toward muted shades, such as grey, brown, black, white, and navy blue. The reason was practical: these colors were more durable and easier to maintain during long journeys at sea. And, let’s be honest, darker colors made them look much cooler, didn’t they? As a bonus, this palette will make the look more wearable today.

Bringing Piratecore to the 21st century

Now, if you follow all these tips, you might still end up looking like you’re heading to a costume party. And we obviously don’t want that. The trick is to tone things down a little. For instance, you can go all in with layering but skip the heavy accessories. Or, on the contrary, wear a simple oversized shirt and style it with a leather corset and bold jewelry. In short: don’t go overboard. Well, unless you want to.
