The 2025 Guide To Autumnal Outerwear

The upcoming outerwear trends for the new season.

POSTED BY MIA DEEMING

As the first leaves begin to fall, it’s a sign to start the yearly hunt to the back of our wardrobes to find our cosy outerwear. The only issue is that they are all so last year and may feel slightly outdated. Here is some inspiration for what the discerning IT-Girls are wearing this autumn, which will keep you looking chic while staying practical.

Funnel-Neck Coats

The funnel-neck takes centre stage as the feature of the season. Originally made prominent by Phoebe Philo for her namesake brand, the funnel-neck coat is taking over runways and everyday wear. With its high neck detailing, this style of coat is perfect for refining any practical warm outfit as we approach the colder months. Be it in wool or leather, there are no limits to the chicness of this silhouette. Hailey Bieber was recently seen elevating this trend by wearing a Phoebe Philo cinched-waisted leather funnel-neck coat as a dress. She paired this with a simple pair of tights, black heels and small, sleek sunglasses. Even when worn as a dress, this type of outerwear is the epitome of style. For an ultimate fashionable finish, tuck your hair into the funnel-neck to add an editorial angled look to your everyday life.

Barn Jacket

A contrasting edge has been popular since the introduction of the “old-money aesthetic,” which saw feature trims on dresses and tops. Now, the contrasting trim remains in fashion, but this time, it is being used in the collar on a barn jacket. Cropped or full-length, tan or printed barn jackets are everywhere. The Queen of the barn jacket remains to be Alexa Chung, and her past Autumn/Winter 2024 edit with Barbour is brilliant inspiration for barn jacket style. She adds elegance to what really is a utility coat originally designed for outdoor farming work. The barn jacket is also great for being layered over a dress. Just look at Miuccia Prada Spring/Summer 2024; that focuses on layering a working jacket over evening wear, which might just be the most nonchalant way to wear this type of coat.

Suede Jackets

Autumn 2025 sees the regeneration of the suede jacket, whether it is a blazer, a trench, or an aviator, suede battles to be the material of the season. Creamier, lighter suede is appearing a lot, with some standouts of this unique colouring being the LOEWE Suede Turn-Up Jacket or the COS Collard Suede Jacket in Beige. Stunning, darker suede like the NOUR HAMMOUR Tate Everyday Suede Trench and the Róhe Belted Suede Wrap Coat is a great colourway for amplifying sophistication. Even a mixture of coloured suede tones is popular, just look at the two-toned Coach Heritage C Plaque Suede Trench Coat worn by Emily Ratajkowski when attending the Coach Fall 2025 Ready-To-Wear Runway. Starting in a light shade and finishing in a darker tone (that coordinated with her suede boots), reminiscent of 1970s looks, this coat could be the suede look of the year.

Trench Coat

As stated above, trench coats have made it clear that they are here to stay, and they may be the one outerwear item from the back of your wardrobe that won’t ever go out of style. Long are the days when they adorned a stereotypical detective; now, they hang from the shoulders of the most stylish of people. There is no need to completely wrap up on our commutes just yet, so the lightweight nature of this coat is perfect for the sunnier, breezier months. Though like the introduction of suede to coat trends, trenches aren’t only just waterproof cotton anymore; leather trenches are increasingly popular, a Rihanna and Anya Taylor-Joy staple. This just proves that the trench coat continues to remain timeless in the fashion sphere.
