Showcasing global talent and inspiring stories.

The inaugural AIFA Awards took place in Lisbon, heralding a new era in film that intertwines AI technology with cinematic storytelling. The event also marked the launch of the AI Film Academy, spearheaded by Clare Maguire, an expert in tech and blockchain technologies with a history of scaling companies, and Leo Crane, a producer with extensive experience in the intersection of digital and physical creative realms.

A Night of Celebration and Recognition

The highlight of the evening was the AImagine Award for Best Film, awarded to Ethereal Moon—comprising Melody Bossan (LeMoon) from France and Dina Lockamy (Ethereal Gwirl) from the USA.

Their film, Denny the Shark, is a darkly whimsical tale of a shark needing a dentist. This collaboration exemplifies the transformative power of AI in reviving creative dreams and forging international partnerships.

LeMoon shared her gratitude: “It's amazing how my faded dream of becoming a filmmaker has been brought back to life thanks to AI. I found a creative partner in Ethereal Gwirl, who shares a similar life experience—we were both stay-at-home mothers when we discovered AI art and were immediately hooked.” Ethereal Gwirl added, “Transitioning from a stay-at-home mother to creating world-building films with this talented 'stranger' from across the globe, who somehow seems to read my mind, has been a life-changing experience.”

A Showcase of Global Talent

Denny the Shark was among 13 films selected from an open call spanning six continents. These films were screened to an enthusiastic audience at the Non Fungible Conference on May 28. The AIFA Awards ceremony attracted luminaries from film, art, music, and fashion, including Beeple, Vincent D’Onofrio, Randi Zuckerberg, and Claire Silver, along with leading web3 technologists and entrepreneurs.

Over 400 guests experienced The Silver Mirror, an immersive cinematic journey by featured artist Fantastic Planet, followed by a showcase of pioneering AI work curated by the AIFA Jury. The evening culminated in a live performance by singer NOANNE, set against an immersive AI backdrop.

Reflecting on AI's Creative Potential

Jury member Laurence Fuller summed up the evening: “Technology for me is an instrument. It’s there, it’s inanimate, but when human fingers and ideas pick it up, it takes on a spiritual quality. I believe humans transcend technology in our capacity to feel and think and process the world around us.”
