The Super Bowl will be taking place on Sunday 13th February 2022 and with it comes the iconic halftime show which this year is led by some of rap’s biggest artists including Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem and Kendrick Lamar. The show is being partially produced by Roc Nation, an entertainment agency founded by Jay-Z, which is an interesting partnership following Jay-Z’s famous rejection of his offer to headline the show. The partnership was a controversial move for Roc Nation as it came after the NFL blackballed Colin Kaepernick following his decision to protest against racial discrimination in America but kneeling during the national anthem. However, the company has clearly had an indisputable influence over the halftime show in the three years since this partnership and has served to promote diversity as seen by the iconic performances by Jennifer Lopez and Shakira which was a momentous occasion for Latino music. This celebration of culture through music is set to continue through the centring of Hip-Hop in this upcoming show.

Unfortunately, the excitement of a halftime show that is truly centring Hip-Hop as a genre for the first time has been tarnished and overshadowed by the recent allegations made against Snoop Dogg who is being sued by his former backup dancer for sexual assault and sex trafficking. Snoop Dogg has denied the claims to TMZ and his appearance at the Super Bowl is set to go ahead.

Kendrick Lamar’s appearance at the halftime show has excited fans globally as the artist has not released music since the soundtrack for Black Panther in 2018 and his last album Damn topped charts across the world in 2017. This resurgence has created a lot of speculation surrounding Lamar’s set with many hoping that he will be performing a new track and will have new music set to be released soon.
