Why Is The Fashion Industry SO Obsessed With IKEA Shopping Bags RN?
Watch as the sturdy tote transforms into fashion!
Swedish home wares behemoth IKEA is known for their affordable furniture, irresistible hotdogs and of course their signature blue, crinkly shopping bags, complete with yellow lettering.
The bags— which retail for only $0.99— are having a serious moment in fashion right now. Earlier this season, fashion house Balenciaga debuted a bright blue tote that seemed to take some serious cues from the sturdy IKEA shopper, although the price tag of $2,145 was a bit heftier. And this week, Pleasures x Chinatown Market jumped on the trend and offered their own interpretation of the functional bag.
The streetwear label reconstructed the iconic, plastic carryall into the IKEA FRAKTA cap, and they even provided instructions to identify an original. (You know, in case a luxury brand tries to steal the design).
How to identify an original IKEA FRAKTA cap.
1. WEAR IT. If it crinkles, it’s the real deal.
2. MULTIFUNCTIONAL. Other than keeping your head fitted, It can carry groceries, bricks and even water.
3. THROW IT IN THE DIRT. A true FRAKTA cap is simply rinsed off with a garden hose when dirty.
4. PRICE TAG. Only $38
The cap is currently limited to 50 pieces and is available for pre-order online.
This isn’t the first time IKEA bags have been the source of inspiration for creatives. A few years ago, unconventional designer Alexandra Louise Champion Hackett (ALCH) crafted wallets, bucket hats and even a matching crop top and skirt from the cobalt blue bags.
And since the source material of these items selling for just a buck, we’re sure this isn’t going to be the last time we see the bags metamorphous into a fashion-forward piece. Stay tuned!
