The Classic Ikea Shopping Bag Now Costs $2K Thanks To Balenciaga
Balenciaga knows a product consumers love when when it sees one. Ikea’s iconic shopping tote has always been a staple of the Ikea shopping experience, second, perhaps only to the hot dogs and Swedish meatballs. At just 99 cents, the electric blue tote is extremely durable and has a Mary Poppins bag-like depth that’s room enough for all of your processions. Best of all, there’s no hair-pulling, physics-defying, migraine-inducing assembly required. A true steal.
Now, it appears that Balenciaga feels the same appreciation for Ikea’s royal blue bag as the rest of us because the fashion house has just released a tote of its own, and it should look seriously familiar to any purveyors of affordable Swedish furniture. Called the “Arena Extra-Large Shopper Tote Bag,” Balenciaga’s latest offering shares some striking similarities with Ikea’s “Frakta” tote. The two bags offer the same bright blue hue, the same trapezoidal shape and the same wide, durable straps. However, there is one major difference. While Ikea’s tote will cost you all of a buck, Balenciaga’s is currently retailing for $2,145.
Ikea is totally fine with its tote concept being recycled and told Today, "We are deeply flattered that the Balenciaga tote bag resembles the Ikea iconic sustainable blue bag for 99 cents. Nothing beats the versatility of a great big blue bag!" Balenciaga, however, has yet to comment.
