Cruise Through Monte Carlo With Chanel’s 2023 Resort Runway

Serving sun, sea and sophistication.

The iconic and luxurious Chanel has returned to the runway for its annual Cruise collection, and it’s been worth the wait. Marking Virginie Viard’s first resort collection since she became Chanel’s creative director in 2019, the line draws on themes of decadence, play and leisure through a combination of beachy and sportswear chic.

Set within none other than the Monte Carlo Beach Hotel, the runway extended the entire full length of the beach and the pier, showcasing classic silhouettes and a casually off-duty yet fabulous ambiance. Standout pieces include Princess Diana-esque boxy shoulder suits, and satin and sequined racer jumpsuits inspired by the illustrious Monaco Grand Prix, with some killer accessories including a slot machine bag and a handbag pendant necklace. And let’s not forget about those motorcycle helmets.

Chanel’s longstanding relationship with Monaco is evident through the latest collection, with Sofia and Roman Coppola’s pre-show trailer adorning archival shots of Gabrielle Chanel herself basking in Monaco’s majestic atmosphere. Speaking on the Principality and its exceptional nature, Viard stated, “From very early on, I knew we would hold a show there, and more precisely at the Beach Hotel. Besides, Karl was dreaming about it.” It’s obvious Monaco couldn’t be a more perfect fit for a Chanel runway show, with both oozing elegance, splendour, and if we’re being honest, the seemingly limitless luxuries of the upper class. Kris Jenner called, she wants her aesthetic back.
