Surprise! 'Power' And 'Woke' Among The Most Used Words In Fashion

So telling.

POSTED BY DEE CUNNING

It's that time of the year when we all get a bit reflective, and while most of us can agree that 2017 was an utter shit show in many respects, we can at least find a morsel of nostalgic escapism in the fashion world.

Lyst has rounded up all of the year's most defining fashion moments by tracking more than 100 million searches from 80 million shoppers across 120 countries. The global fashion search platform crunched the queries, page views and sales across five million products from 12,000 designers and stores to uncover 2017's top brands and celebrities – headed up by Gucci and Rihanna, obvs, unless you've been living under a rock for the past 12 months. The site has also analyzed thousands of online articles and worked out the most used fashion words of the year, and again the results aren't at all surprising.

'Power' and 'woke' took the top spots, revealing the extent of the cross-pollination of politics and fashion and highlighting the wave of activism that took place this year, especially in the feminist camp. Not far behind were the extremely telling words, 'statement,' 'floral,' 'millennial,' 'extra,' 'masculine,' 'cult,' 'ugly,' and 'vegan,' which we're pretty sure could be mashed into a killer headline. Millennial dresses extra in a cult band tee, statement florals and ugly vegan sneakers. See?

Here are the ten breakthrough fashion designers of the year.
