Zoë Kravitz Makes Directing Debut Rewriting ‘Pussy Island’

“I started writing it pre-#MeToo, pre-Harvey [Weinstein]”

Zoë Kravitz opened up about her writer-director process in ‘Pussy Island’, a thriller centered around a corrupt inner circle of elites on a private island. The actor spoke about revising much of the script following the #MeToo movement and sexual allegations against Holywood figures.

“I started writing it pre–#MeToo, pre–Harvey [Weinstein]. Then the world started to have the conversation, so [the script] changed a lot. It became more about a power struggle and what that power struggle means. I rewrote it a million times,” she told Elle.

‘Pussy Island’, set to begin filming in the summer, is co-written by Zoë Kravitz and E. T. Feigenbaum. Kravitz’ directorial debut stars Frida, an LA cocktail waitress, and Slater King, a philanthropist and tech mogul played by Channing Tatum.

Describing the casting Kravitz explained ““Looking at [Tatum’s] work and hearing him speak about Magic Mike and the live show, I’m like, I think he’s a feminist. You need to be so far from who this is, where it’s not scary. And I don’t think we’ve ever seen him play someone dark. I’m excited to see him do that.”

Kravitz spoke about her intentions to start a conversation around the more terrifying parts of this elite culture in the MGM acquired film. She hopes to deliver “something really distinctive” and rid herself of self doubt in bringing the story to light.

“But I know the story so well, and I’m trying to focus less on ‘Am I going to do a good job?’ and more on ‘What is my intention?’ ” she went on.

The Elle interview follows the cancellation of the Hulu TV series ‘High Fidelity’ that Kravitz starred in.
