Dirty Little Funeral: Be Outfit Ready When That Unforeseen Time Arrives

For them, not you.

POSTED BY SARAH DE BRUN

The whole world can agree that life is full of surprises. Last-minute party invites, an expired driver'€™s license and even sample sales (petty, but addictive) all seem to pop up out of nowhere without any forewarning. Right at the top of that Surprise! list, besides an unexpected pregnancy, is a funeral. No one sees them coming, so having a proper outfit ready to go at any time is beyond convenient.

Luckily, if you're still in your 20s, odds are you haven'€™t attended too many funerals since the majority of people that pass away are older. Unless you're hanging with the wrong, wrong crowd. Either way, before you hit the mall, head for your closet. Imagine you'€™re dressing for a job interview and stick to a palette of muted, dark hues. Black and navy are always acceptable. Maybe go crazy and reach for a forest green.

If the need for new purchases is in order, some safe bets include a tailored blazer, blouse and skinny pants or a sophisticated dress. Remember to keep shoulders and knees covered, which sounds prudish but you know mom doesn't GAF if you are trying to express your style. Do. Not. Embarrass. Her. Also, don'€™t try to push the limits with bold colors or eye-catching accessories. There is no need to stand out during a time that couldn'€™t be any further from surrounding around your fashion choices.

Before you freak about this lackluster OOTD, look on the bright side (if there is one right now), all of these pieces can be worn again on a professional level so it's not a complete loss. No pun intended. And how happy would the person whose funeral it is be to know that whatever you wore to honor them helped to get you a dope promotion in the future?

Last but not least, be wise in your shoe choices. Go ahead and listen to Beyoncè'€™s 6 Inch while getting ready but don't you dare walk into that building wearing a heel that reaches above 3 inches. Modesty is key and people will appreciate it. A few hours out of the day isn'€™t asking much and as long as everyone's life goes according to plan, you won'€™t need to dress like this again until the old age when these clothing restrictions become actual wardrobe preferences of yours. Therein lies the real fashion dilemma.
