The Transparency Trend: Louis Vuitton's Inflatable Monograms

Is transparent outerwear paving the way for futuristic fashion?

POSTED BY TESS HARDY

We all know by now that Virgil Abloh isn’t one to hold back when it comes to futuristic fashion. It looks like he’s done it again, paving the way with his transparent outerwear.

Initially revealed in Louis Vuitton’s Spring/Summer 2021 collection, Abloh’s inflatable monogram pieces are now available to shop. The PVC jackets debut in blouson and gilet styles, which can be inflated as desired.

The Monogram Inflatable Blouson comes in a beautiful lilac color, coated in the luxury fashion house’s signature LV monogram motif, as well as an icy blue vest to match. The frosted puffer jacket is created from transparent technical fabric, featuring a central white zip and removable hood with snap button.

The Inflatable Monogram Canvas Gilet arrives in the classic brown design with see-through PVC pockets attached. Made from a fashionable mix of transparent natural PVC and ultra light Monogram canvas, the technical vest is tailored with a V neck and black zip at the front.

Both pieces can be styled in a variety of ways using valves to increase or decrease the inflation size. They reference the season’s puppet theme and giant balloon-like figures that were on display in the Shanghai fashion show.

Since the collection was presented in Tokyo and Shanghai last year, the range has sparked a DIY trend in China; people are creatively crafting their own versions using the likes of air cushion packaging.

The statement pieces are priced at $3,950 and $3,400 USD. Take a look at Louis Vuitton’s blouson and gilet online. Or if you’re an experimental trendsetter who loves the 2000s vibes, why not give Abloh a run for his money?
