Eat My Shorts: Hotpants Are Back In Business

Life's short, take risks.

This summer, we’re taking ‘micro’ trends a bit too literally and dusting off our old short shorts. What was once the staple of every ‘00s wardrobe has been rejuvenated with stripped back, modernized styling (we’ll leave the leggings at home, this time).

The resurgence of Y2K fashion has pushed the idea of leg-conscious dressing, with micro becoming the new mini. Recent runways have notified the hotpant lovers that thighs are back in fashion, their grand return evokes a sense of familiarity and nostalgia, disregarding the temptation of the undeniably more practical yet slightly less desirable baggy jort that ruled summertime style in 2023.

Miu Miu is constantly raising the bar (as well as the hemlines) for flirty fashion, showcasing raw-edged micro miniskirts first seen in their 2022 spring collection alongside low-waisted, naval-baring shorts. We also had a brief encounter with jean panties, or “janties,” initially created by Glenn Martins for Y/Project, taking playful proportions to the next level.

Following in Miuccia Prada’s footsteps, we plan on breaking the dress code of society, accepting the micro short trend in all forms: from frilly bloomers to boxers. Contemporary styling requires the juxtaposition of big biker boots and a baby tee, a step up from the daisy dukes and flower crowns of yesteryear.

If you’re desperately searching for a look that wouldn’t go amiss in the fields at Glastonbury festival next to the likes of Kate Moss and Alexa Chung, then look no further.
