The 4 Step Summer Makeup Routine For Beginners

POSTED BY ALLISON EDWARDS

Summer makeup is to regular makeup as Kim Kardashian is to Kylie Jenner. Related, but also totally separate beings with unique personalities and style. (This is where the comparison to the Kardashian/Jenner sisters stops because we do not intend for this to become some sort of competition; they’re both great women!)

Regular makeup comes with all the creative freedom in the world—use whatever works for you. Maybe that’s a full eye look, a matte, red lip and some brow gel. BUT if you add in 90% humidity, your face will suddenly transform into a drippy, clown-resembling mess. And we all want to avoid that, don’t we? Good news: Achieving a summer makeup look doesn’t have to be hard; it just involves using some different makeup. Things like:

1. Tinted moisturizer rather than foundation

In times of summer heat, you want to make sure your face isn’t going to literally melt off, so you need coverage that breathes. Your answer? Tinted moisturizer! Laura Mercier’s Tinted Moisturizer is an obvious choice because it has an oil-free and sunscreen version. Glossier’s Perfecting Skin Tint is also a great option for a barely-there-but-still-there look.

2. Waterproof mascara

Yes, it can be ultra-annoying to take off, but when you think of all the sweating and swimming that’s ahead of you, it’s worth it. L’Oreal’s Voluminous mascara won’t let you down.

3. Bronzer

We all know: Everyone looks better with a bit of sun. But we also all know: The sun is slowly killing us. So, we gotta fake that summer glow. Benefit’s Hoola is practically idiot-proof. Even if you’re a true beginner, you’ll be able to achieve the effect you want. Simply swirl in your brush (it even comes with one!), tap it a few times and swipe it over the bridge of your nose, on your cheekbones and on your forehead. Voilà! Instant sun kissed skin!

4. Mist for setting

We love Urban Decay's All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray. Like, really love it. It’s a setting mist that doesn’t give you any stickiness or extreme dewiness (because you’ll get that on your own in the summer!). It just meshes everything together and holds your makeup look in place through all the summer elements. Perfection!
