Sophie Day X Alife / G Shock: Young Americaâ
The thing about nudity is this: it’s not a problem until someone tells you it is. Think back to when we were kids in the summer; girls and boys, running around topless together at the beach, or splashing about in the pool on holiday – were we bothered? Nope. Incidentally, if this image makes you uncomfortable right now, then you might want to think about why that is. Someone who is actively asking and expressing a resounding “wtf though?” on behalf of her – quite rightly pissed off – #freethenipple embracing generation, is eighteen year old NYC Photographer: Sophie Day.
With a naturally lit footage style, Sophie’s photography and films showcase things unashamedly how they are: “I touched my arms and my legs, and I realised that these are my things”, she has said of the development of her work, and portraits her subjects while often topless herself, disarming the >>insert eye roll<< shock factor that a pair of boobs still manages to generate, and to work on a personal level with her subjects; most of whom have felt their body has been a bought and sold battleground, at one time, or another. There is a reminder here: naked doesn’t automatically equal sexual.
Sophie recently shot “Young America”, a film that captures NYC’s young, creative scenes; a realtime, scriptless window into the lives of her friends and peers, commissioned by ALIFE / G-SHOCK. While body acceptance isn’t the particular focus of this project, the sense of authenticity is, and kudos to the commissioners for being in tune with how things actually are, rather than how they would like to engineer them to be.
