Virgil Abloh & Kim Jones Team Up With Nike On Soccer Collections

A fashion homage to the beautiful game.

POSTED BY DEE CUNNING

Not gonna lie, we were about to hit you with a hilarious soccer joke until we realized, none of them are actually funny. So we'll just hit you with a terrible one we found while Googling “hilarious football jokes” instead.

In the football stadium corridor, two fans were talking...

First fan: "I wish I'd brought the piano to the stadium."

Second fan: "Why would you bring a piano to the football game?"

First fan: "Because I left the tickets on it."

(Insert confused guy meme here)

Anyway, the reason we're getting all worked up about the beautiful game is not only because the World Cup is approaching and we have an extra excuse to go to the pub. Off-White's Virgil Abloh and Dior Homme's Kim Jones have teamed up with Nike to design their own soccer-inspired collections that'll have you dribbling more than Beckham's buns.

Abloh's 'Football, Mon Amour' collection incorporates his numbers from his playing years and is heavily inspired the European kits he loves. “The great thing about the vocabulary and history of football is that aesthetically it has its own look. I was always inspired by the way European teams have a sponsor printed over the chest. When I was working on this collection, I wanted to celebrate the different variants of typography,” says Abloh. And you guessed it: instead of the sponsor, you simply get “LOGO.”

Conversely, Kim Jones' 'Football Reimagined' collection subverts the traditional soccer aesthetic, clashing avant garde tailoring with sport tech, while nodding to the heyday of London's King's Road. “That whole punk era was all about proportions that gave power to the wearer. I was inspired by the idea of DIY of the time — cutting up and putting things back together — to create something new,” Jones explains.

Both collections are built from the bottom up, with Abloh taking on the Flyknit Zoom Fly and Jones pulling inspiration from his favorites the Footscape, the Vandal and the Air Max 97 to create an entirely new high-end sneaker.

The Nike x Kim Jones 'Football Reimagined' collection launches June 7, while the Nike x Off-White 'Football, Mon Amour' collection launches June 14. Shop at nike.com and select global retailers.
