CGI Influencer Lil Miquela Is Pat McGrath's Latest Muse
A bold statement.
In a surprising turn of events, makeup icon Pat McGrath has taken to Instagram to name influencer Lil Miquela as her latest muse. “SO SHOOK to DEBUT my LATEST MESMERIZING #McGrathMuse,” McGrath wrote in the caption together with a mini tutorial for the “makeup” look.
Since we last wrote about her, Lil Miquela's Instagram following has snowballed, and there's an ostensible split between fans – or Miquelites – who genuinely aspire to her fashionable lifestyle and sweet personality, and those that follow the enigma of a computer generation masquerading as a real person. Her mere presence is bewildering and polarizing; an absolutely genius commentary on our reality-blurring digitalized world.
Pat McGrath's post has served to further spread the confusion, with comments such as “How is this a thing I'm so confused then I looked at it's page and I'm more confused” and “this is a bratz doll lmao dead.” But is choosing a CGI muse really so far-fetched for a makeup artist who has spent her career augmenting faces, which are in turn further augmented by Photoshop for glossy magazine editorials and brand campaigns? Augmented reality is our reality, however unsettling, and artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly normalized, too. Coming from such a well-respected industry figure, choosing Lil Miquela as a muse is a bold statement to make.
