Golden Globes 2017
Yesterday, Hollywood’s biggest stars were out in force to celebrate the 74th annual Golden Globe Awards.
Hosted by Jimmy Fallon, it was a star-studded event, with lots of celebrities strutting their stuff on the famous red carpet. There was floor-length gowns, glitter, sparkles and classy pouts everywhere! Here’s a lowdown of the highlights of the night.
As highly anticipated, the hit film ‘La La Land’ won ALL seven categories it was nominated for and its main characters, played by Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, won acting Golden Globes for their performances. Fallon made his debut with a funny, pre-recorded musical tribute to the top winning film.
The opening set of the show was clearly planned to be a clever response to last years critics’, who labelled it a ‘#soWhite award show’. Moonlight had a surprise win, receiving the final award of the night- Golden Globe for best film drama however, it couldn’t quite keep up with La La Land, which completely dominated the night!
British television also had a successful night over in the States, as The Crown and The Night Manager won several awards. The Crown star, Claire Foy, won best actress in a television drama for her performance as the Queen, whilst Tom Hiddleston won best actor in a limited series or TV movie for The Night Manager. Another British win was for actor, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, for the best supporting actor in a film category, for his performance in Tom Ford's Nocturnal Animals.
Aside from all the awards being won, celeb’s were sure to keep social media updated with the night’s events. Singer/songwriter, John Legend’s name was misspelled on his name card and his wife, Chrissy Teigen was quick to tweet a picture of her frowning hubby.
However, the moment from last night that everyone is gossiping about, is Meryl Streep’s speech that she made whilst collecting her Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement. The Hollywood starlet made a powerful statement ,where instead of focusing on an acceptance speech, she called out the President-elect Donald Trump for a heartbreaking "performance" — referring to a shocking moment during the 2016 campaign, when Trump mocked a disabled reporter.
"There was one performance this year that stunned me," she said.
"It sank its hooks in my heart. Not because it was good. It was that moment when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter.”
Ms. Streep campaigned for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election. Host, Jimmy Fallon also made several jokes at the President-elect’s expense.
Hugh Laurie won his third Golden Globe for his role in The Night Manager. Laurie was another celeb to make a Trump joke, saying he was honoured to win at the last ever Golden Globes (because it has foreign in the title!- Foreign Press Awards)
"I don't mean to be gloomy," he said.
"It's just it has 'Hollywood', 'foreign' and 'press' in the title.”
However, lets not forget the night wasn't just a chance to dig the new US President, awards were flying around and it was a night dedicated to celebrating 2016’s on screen successes!
Will Trump respond to these Hollywood digs?
