North London-based talent Carmen Lees makes a stunning return to the scene with the independently released “Cocoon” – her first release since 2020’s Living Room EP.

Returning to showcase her naturally emotive vocal talent, “Cocoon” fuses neo-soul inflections with sleek R&B twists and vibrant orchestral moments that make up a notably sensual release. Self-produced by Carmen, “Cocoon” captures her feelings of self-doubt after experiencing difficulties within the music industry – affecting her confidence both as a creator and a woman.

Speaking on the track, Carmen Lees states: “Lyrically it’s an expression of growth, written to my old self who was more carefree and extroverted - encouraging my shyness and introverted ways to fall away like a cocoon. As a beginner female producer, this song allowed me to practice combining instrumental elements together to create a song I view as art. It’s very freeing to release a personal little snippet of my journey.”

Using music as an uplifting vehicle for storytelling and self-reflection, Lees’ natural orientation to jazz chords and low-ebb hip-hop creates a significantly unique atmosphere, finely balanced by her standout vocal range.

Previously working with Robin Banerjee – Amy Winehouse’s former guitarist following a chance meeting at London’s Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club; the musical chemistry was undeniably instantaneous, seeing them begin a series of collaborations starting with “Foolish Views”, which caught the attention of BBC Introducing, marking Carmen’s breakthrough into the landscape.

With critical attention coming across the spectrum from the likes of Notion, C-Heads and Spindle, Carmen Lees is ready to reintroduce herself as an artist and storyteller across a beguiling set of new releases. Mark Carmen as a significant one to watch across 2023.
